Molten bronze being poured at Red Temple Foundry

How We Work

Our Process

The lost-wax process has been used for over 5,000 years. Here's how we do it.

Lost-wax casting is the definitive method for casting bronze sculpture. It produces the finest surface detail and allows the greatest creative freedom.

At Red Temple, we carry out every stage of the process in our Birmingham foundry. You deal directly with the craftspeople doing the work, and we keep you informed at every stage.

01

Enquiry

Tell us about your project: dimensions, quantity, material, deadline and any reference images. We'll come back to you quickly with initial thoughts and any questions.

02

Project Review

We review your project in detail and prepare a clear, itemised quote. For complex projects, we may arrange a call to discuss the approach.

03

Mould Making

A flexible rubber mould is taken from your original. We use the appropriate mould type for your piece, from simple block moulds to complex multi-part constructions. Depending on the complexity of the work, this process may require the original to be cut or altered, and we will always discuss this with you in advance.

04

Wax Production

Hollow wax reproductions are cast from the mould. Each wax is carefully chased to remove mould lines and prepare the surface for casting. We then design and construct a running and rising system: the network of sprues and vents that ensures molten bronze flows cleanly through the mould and air escapes without trapping, giving a sound, complete cast.

05

Investment

The wax assembly is encased in investment, a fine refractory plaster, using the tin method in conjunction with vacuum casting. The vacuum draws the investment into every detail of the wax, eliminating air bubbles and ensuring a clean, accurate mould.

06

Casting

The investment mould is fired in a kiln, burning out the wax (the "lost wax"). Molten bronze is poured into the hot mould. Once cooled, the investment is broken away to reveal the raw casting.

07

Finishing

Sprues and vents are removed and the surface is worked by hand: grinding, filing and polishing to match the quality of your original. This is skilled, time-consuming work.

08

Patination

Chemical patinas are applied by hand using heat and a range of compounds. We offer a full palette of colours, from traditional brown and black to verde, blue-green and custom finishes.

09

Delivery

Your finished work is carefully packed and delivered to you. We can arrange specialist art transport for large or fragile pieces.
