Firstly a reusable "master" mould must be made from the original sculpture , produced with a long life silicone rubber skin, with a hard lightweight resin-polymer case.
A wax is then
taken from the mould using a slushing technique , building up a wall thickness
as it cools. The wax is then carefully removed from the mould and seam lines and
defects are removed. Clients are invited to inspect the waxes prior to casting. The
wax then has wax runners attached to allow the metal to enter the sculpture, as
well as a pouring cup. The finished assembly is then coated with a silica
refractory plaster and heated until the wax has melted out through the runners, leaving
a cavity in which the molten metal is poured.
After the mould has cooled it is broken off and reveals the metal sculpture. It then has the risers removed and has the surface chased and cleaned up. To achieve the final surface finish the bronze is heated with a flame whilst applying chosen chemicals with a brush. It is then sealed with beeswax to help preserve the colour.
